Old Dominion University, more often referred to as simply ODU, is a large public research university located in historic Norfolk, which is an independent city in the Commonwealth of the US state of Virginia, being the 2nd largest city in the state, having a population estimated at a number of more than 200 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Norfolk is one of nine cities and seven counties that constitute the Hampton Roads metro area, which is officially called Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC MSA.
ODU was established in 1930, first starting as the Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary, becoming Old Dominion College in 1962, the institution achieving university status and adopting its current name in 1969. Today, Old Dominion University offers its students 70 bachelor's degrees in various fields of study, including 60 master's and 35 doctoral degrees, also being the only university in the US to offer MBA concentrations in Maritime, Transportation, and Port Logistics Management, its Marine Science and Coastal Engineering educational programs being well-known.
Athletics
ODU's athletic teams are known as the Monarchs (men) and Lady Monarchs (women), who compete in the Colonial Athletic Association, in various sports, the university's most known sports team being the Lady Monarchs basketball team, which has won 3 national championships in 1979, 1980 and 1985. The Monarchs have experienced victory in many other of the sports in which they compete, besides women's basketball, the teams having a ''win portfolio'' which contains 29 national championships and 4 individual titles, including 15 in men's and women's sailing and 9 in women's field hockey.
